Owe Not To Paint James Stanfield

One of the first ways I was able to get a foothold on Joseph Beuys’s output was to think that just after WWII all German artists must have felt that they should stop making art. Art, so easily associated with patronage and appreciation, must have seemed an unreasonable gesture when your nation had been torn apart, and the people around you starved. This must have felt double when you realized that you had some role in the deaths of so many others. This must have felt triple when you understood how much the rest of the world was demonizing you. No one wanted to hear your voice anymore. You owed it to the world not to make art.
I understood Joseph Beuys’s practice as an illustration of how one survives such a time. How one can become transformed and reborn, and even while doing this still manage to take some of the important things from an unpopular heritage into the future. I saw – and still see – Beuys as an energizer of students, a political voice for those who should not speak, and a guide.
As America is an advanced capitalist system and since art in New York is a big part of that, and since painting is the object that provides the most easily packaged experience of art, I have chosen painting as a whipping boy. I’m not saying that I don’t appreciate painting, because I have really fallen for a few of them, but today I would be hard pressed to find a painting that is politically subversive. The ones I see are all politically benign. If you’re unable to stay outside the realm of the collector – no painting is supposed to - and equally unable to embed such a critique, you are merely a participant in a money-is-our-politics culture. This is a bananas capitalist governance that has demanded we destroy millions of lives in every pocket of the globe.
The same can be said for most of the sculpture I’ve seen here. Much of it leans solely toward pleasure. Most of it refuses to complicate its political use.
I’m not saying we should not be paid for our artwork, and I’m not saying that we should shun all collectors. I am saying that it is important to look at the forces we are currently governed under and find our artwork's eventual destination in all of that.
There is wealth in New York - wealth like I’ve never witnessed before. Artists want a slice. That’s no different from what anyone else wants, but I would like to remind artists that we are still the voices that slide up and down the economic ladder. We talk to the insanely rich, the mildly wealthy, the building owner, the homeowner, the average plebeian, the poorer prole, and, sometimes, even the destitute. Often we do all this talking in one day. We possess tools, not the least of which is beauty, that aid us in producing things that slip into all these people’s lives.
At a time when what money wants it gets, it becomes important to remember that we can’t beat our insane version of capitalism with artwork, but we can complicate the cycle of exploitation. Until our leadership creates a nation that puts some ideal above money, I owe not to paint.

Roy. Nice. Your writing here is really getting me. Alive and kicking. I am with you one hundred percent, I believe in being politically subversive. I disagree that painting is the problem, but I understand the urge to shun something in the name of integrity and beliefs.
To be a painter right now is to be about the most uncool person at the party- the dork that didn't get the memo that checkers and stripes don't go together, and that indeed Star Trek is not a socially acceptable conversation topic- even in irony.
I think we'll probably agree to disagree on what should be the whipping boy, but I for one, am standing up for the paintings. I don't know what I should shun in the name of being politically subversive, but perhaps I will shun graffiti just to finish out the image of a high-and-mighty traditional painter. No but seriously, you have a point. What do we do as artists these days to make ourselves relevant in our society that is so strongly based in economics?
I agree and disagree to point made both by Roy and Mary.
Painting is not necesarry the source of all problems, but it has a higher exchange rate at the market. But, look at how 'cool' painters like Jules de Balincourt, Dana Schutz, or (miraculously) John Currin are.
I hope this might help push things towards progress as everything has been pretty stagnant for the better part of this new decade.
Markets and money have been dictating what artists are making recently. Students know what sells, what is successful, and what is not. They read the magazines with articles written by curators and critics that are mutually involved with the market of economic-controlled creativity (art). So, to bring art back on course, we need to backtrack a bit and reclaim the ability to make other definitions.
Advertisements on TV or in public displays seem to be freer than art.
The need to shed adherence to the canon is apparent. We don't need permission to make what we want to make!
Ian, just to clarify, I meant "cool" in the sense of subversion. None of the painters you mentioned are nearly as subversive as someone like Joseph Beuys or Robert Smithson were. Currin's the closest one, and even he's a mile off of being anywhere near the cool table in terms of being subversive or being relevant in the way Roy talks about. No painter is. It's all seemingly navel gazing.
It's like somehow, sculpture or architecture has this inherent or perceptive ability to get at things that paintings can't. Even advertising seems to get at subversion faster than we can subvert the advertisement.
I do believe in paintings though. As much as can see that subversive quality in sculptures and architecture, I believe that Beauty is such a strong force that it can ultimately help change. I hope that if I continue to exalt Beauty higher than money that it could change at least the way I live my life. I don't know how to change the system though. Debord mentioned that the only way is through organized upheaval. Where is that happening?
...also by Debord is the notion that if you continue to negotiate "the spectacle" on its terms (i.e. market forces) that you will never subvert it. It always wins. Damn Spectacle!
I do think subversion is something many more artists need to be participating in, and I do think that you can be a painter and do this. We should all make what we want as well as make what we feel can contribute to the worlds we participate in. But we all need to start embedding a kind of protest in order not to become participants that pretend what is happening is ok
I, however, see painting as being in a more difficult situation when by definition a painting is a packaged, transportable artwork. Since painting is what most collectors want it has the strongest relationship to money. The painting I see today, even if its subject is the damage brought on by our version of ruthless capitalism, becomes cute due to the way it uses representation. Also, the activity of painting suggests a sealed off studio practice. Overtime I bet it becomes very easy to become hermetic, not bringing in anything from the real world at all.
I recognize that the recent show at LFL of Jules de Balincourt took on the politics that I’m referring to. But even though the work was aware of the ensuing nightmare that maybe the next few decades in America, it framed these politics in a way that made a mockery of my own feelings about the subject. Because of its context and the way de Balincourt used the language of painting, he managed to over-contain these anxieties. It filled the politics that it would bring to the table with irony - not unlike the toxic center of a Hostess cupcake. The little men running for the hills, the rainbow above the decimated town, all made light of a truly dire situation. I see those paintings as a way of digesting and thereby easing the conscience of their collectors. All of us participate daily in an economy that fuels death in every other part of the world. If we can see ourselves as the silly cartoons that populate a de Balincourt, we can again become lazy and insensitive to the world situation. Yeah, you’re worried? You’re just being a silly Twinkie.
I would compare de Balincourt to 80’s Leon Gollub. That work was cartoony, but not over contained. Its urgency was much more frightening. Also, maybe, early Peter Saul. I think he was digging some stuff up. Who else took some things on with paintings? Early Andy Warhol (yes, probably)? Troy Brauntuch. I can’t find these people in painting in my generation. What does Dana Shutz take on?

Wow, what a can of worms you opened Roy. In a single pithy post, you summed up the struggle of western art. Nice job!
I’m just not really sure why you singled out painters. I think your point is here, “What do we do as artists these days to make ourselves relevant in our society that is so strongly based in economics?” I don't have any interesting answer. Just a further question to add to yours: what is that we want art to do and why?
My first thought after reading the post/ responses was to consider the purpose or motivation for making art in the first place. It seems to me that people look to art-making as a method for self-realization. Mary says it here, “I hope that if I can continue to exalt Beauty higher than money that it could change at least the way I live my life”.
This idea of art as a path to self-knowledge is political. It challenges social conformity and encourages tremendous thought and action, which inherently challenges the status quo. So I’m wondering about the value of creating work that is reactionary, politically timely and intentionally subversive. Who is that work for? It might be redundant and didactic. The role of the dissident artist is expected and a little played out by now.
That’s not to say that I’m fine with our social climate, and that I don’t enjoy subversion. I really thrive on it. But why is that? I'm interested to find out why I haven’t learned to accept our reality without becoming more cynical, passive and apathetic. Just thinking about all this…
I recently read the essay ‘The Disenfranchisement of Art’ by Arthur Danto who questioned the assumption among artists and politicians that art can actually have political consequence. He says that we should reevaluate that assumption. I couldn’t find a copy online, but it’s worth reading. He quotes W.H. Auden, “I know that all the verse I wrote, all the positions I took in the thirties, did not save a single Jew. Those attitudes, those writings, only help oneself”.
Later in the essay Danto writes, “The history of art is the history of the suppression of art, itself a kind of futility if that which one seeks to cast in chains has no effectiveness whatever, and one confers upon art the illusion of competence by treating as dangerous what would make nothing happen if it were allowed to be free”.
I agree with Auden (and Danto) that those inclined to grow mentally, even spiritually with art are open to and interested in art in the first place. It’s the old preaching to the converted bit. Art is about changing oneself, not changing a culture.
I also don’t see the “market of economic-controlled creativity (art)” (I love that phrase Ian) as a situation unique to our era. Money has always influenced the arts in western culture. Think of the baroque'sendlessly boring still life’s of rich people’s possessions that artists had to represent to pay the bills. The same goes for renaissance artists who dealt with the church’s monopolizing patronage.
Danto might be right in saying that we have idealistic and unreasonable expectations for art. But I don’t know, because an artist like Beuys did make a dramatic social contribution. In a way, he refutes Danto’s argument. I’m going to see what Danto has to say about Beuys.
Recently, when I went to a museum in Japan I was with a friend that knows nothing about contemporary art. She asked me the usual question: “This is art?”
I couldn’t answer that. I couldn’t illustrate what art is to me with the works that were in the exhibition we were looking at. I think this was because the works were imitating the look of art. It was only the context of the museum giving these works the power to be art. I wasn’t interested in the work myself so I couldn’t point out to her why she should be interested.
I think the way Roy is defining political or subversive art is a call for the continual restatement of this kind of question. What is art, and why is art is still here? The artworks in the Japanese museum were not asking these questions.
Wow! Powerful piece of writing! Could this be a call to artistic arms or a manifesto?
I quite agree on nearly all points and I think it so very crucial that artists look not only deep into themselves, but also turn an eye deeply into the environment in, and from which, their art is developed and shared.
What is the goal of art? What does art mean to us from a personal, cultural and political perspective.
I think what you are saying is so important to consider as our country continues to slide into what appears to be a very dark period where individuals have no importance unless they have wealth.
Art is a powerful tool and I am not always sure that the people who view it realize the impact it has on a level that they might not even be aware.
The responsibilty of art.
However, my real questions --
why can't painting be a means of pure and important expression? why must artists shy away from painting as an art form? Why not simply turn it around? Why must there be a whipping boy?
..especially given that Whipping Boys were originally innocent slaves who were punished for the deeds of the King's children? In this age of hyper-captialism (which I do believe is destined to crash and burn) -- would it be better to avoid the use of scape goats?

preteen underage video could feel him rising, and could feel his hands on her preteen 8 15 pic as he guided her to lay on her stomach.
Shifting her position, Jack pulled on her hips, raising her ass up into the air,
his hands carressing the cheeks of her buttocks and then grasping her hips firmly, his hardness pressing once more into her warm folds.
She moaned as he slammed suddenly into her, the motion starting a chain reaction that continued as he violently pounded into her willing cunt.
His fingers gripped into her hips harshly, pulled her toward him, and as he thrust into her she felt herself propelled in the other direction,
only to be pulled quickly back. Her breasts swinging freely, preteen angels felt a tingling pain in her nipples as her breasts bounced in time to his thrusts.
She moaned as she felt him tense, arching her back and trying to further expose her sex, trying to take as much of him into her as possible.
To the side, in the mirror, she could see his figure above her, his head tilted back as he groaned his pleasure.
Emily.... Oh, God... Emily!
"Come, Jack... Please, Come..." preteen hidden pic pleaded, and she found that the words were more for her than for encouragement.
She wanted to feel the hot rush of his seed, wanted to drink it inside herself and hear his moans of pleasure.
Emily... Emily...
He slammed almost painfully into her, and preteen sex pic galleries found herself nearly screaming outloud at the wonderful abuse.
He filled her so completely that she felt nearly impaled; stretched her so intensely that she feared to be torn.
His fingers dug into her flesh, and she could hear him slapping against her as his moans began to rise.

As much as viagra has rescued the people from the cruel grip of erectile dysfunction it has also proved to be a curse to many because of wrong conception and wrong interpretation of its functioning. People buy viagra with the notion of having an extra erotic night without actually having the need to. Nowadays Viagra is also easily accessible and anyone can buy viagra online. In addition viagra online is more often than not cheap viagra i.e. a discounted version. People can easily get Viagra from the online pharmacies using wrong information. But in this way they will harm no one but their own selves, so it is always handy to have a clear conception of the drug one is taking.
